Friendship Bracelets

In honor of the warm weather we had this weekend.
Friendship Bracelets
One string over the other
Sky blue brush of brimming clouds
weaving under the flush-
red skin of aerosol sunscreen
and across the plush green
grass itching my knees
with a dust patch dirt knot
Do you like the way
our legs touch and eyes glance
from the brush of hair, to the
“no, give it here,”
when I pull the knots just
a bit tighter, a little cleaner
so I can look into your face
flecked mascara and a halo
of sunlight that makes scrunching
eyes look like teething smiles
There is a pass of a water bottle
that says more
than any words we are trading
Heads tilted down
look past the breeze
and see what I see
We are nearing the end of the rope
bracelets looking quite different
despite the shared colors
and patterns of careful swirls
melding into one
bright fuchsia and a twilight
ocean cerulean
against the setting sun
One more knot from packing up
One more shift of knees from glancing
One more minute from sunset
One more time between you and me
