Destination Blacksburg

It’s no secret that the Fall semester is far busier than the Spring in terms of student life for one major reason, Hokie Football. From tailgating, to the game itself, to post victory celebrations, every hokie fan is kept busy on game weekends, but that is not to say there is nothing to do in Blacksburg if there is not a game to watch! Compiled below is a list of fun weekend activities right in our own backyard.

1. Farmers Market!

Every Saturday morning local artisans set up shop in the pavillion next to Benny's Pizza. There you can find novelty goods, a variety of local food, and so many dogs! There is often a live band as well.

2. Tubing down the New River

For less than $15 you can lounge down the new river in a tube. Grab your friends and sunglasses, and destress from a tough week of classes.

3. Cinebowl

Bowling and movies in the same place?! Cinebowl should be a bucket list item for all Tech students.

4. Hiking

This one, while not all that out of the box, is a favorite among students. Different trails offer a range of difficulty levels. If you’re looking for something short and sweet, try the Cascades or Bald Knob. If your looking for something a little more challenging McAfee’s Knob and Dragons Tooth have views well worth the climb.

5. Volunteer

The Montgomery County animal shelter is always looking for volunteers to help take care of the dogs and cats currently residing. Just a short drive to Christiansburg and you can spend time giving back and meeting new furry friends.

Being a small mountain town does not limit Blacksburg from offering plenty of activities for a variety of interests. Check back with us at the Silhouette to find out more about what is going on on campus and around town.
